Interest tags are a preference, not a lock

You can add up to five tags. A shared tag is preferred. If the line has nobody with that tag, you are not left waiting forever for a perfect overlap.

Start chatting

The link has a code. A badge stays on the visitor's device if they start a chat. We don't store who invited whom.

How a tag is used

Tags are short labels you type, such as music or books. If someone waiting has one of the same labels, you are paired with them and the chat says which tag you shared. If not, the match is marked random.

What a number next to a tag means

When a count is shown, it is the number of people in the lobby using that tag now. No number means zero, or that the count could not be read. The site does not add a baseline to make a tag look popular.

Tags are not a profile

They are not shown as a public page, and they are not a list of friends who like the same thing. Clear them by not adding them on the next search. They are optional on every start.

Questions

What if my tag is unusual?

You may wait, and then be paired at random if nobody else is using it. The screen tells you which of those happened.

Can I add a person’s name as a tag?

You should not. Tags are topical hints. The guidelines also ask you not to try to identify someone.
